MIP® | LETTER FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
I am thrilled to return to the MIP® family in 2019 in my second year as Artistic Director and the
11th year of this unique program. It is exciting to think about the legacy that has established MIP®
as one of the Top Ten International Contemporary Dance Summer Programs in 2017 & 2018.
While reflecting on MIP’s vision and the true inspiration of its mission, I had a conversation with my dear friend and past MIP® collaborator, Jill Johnson. She articulated what we believe to be intrinsic to the mission of MIP®, and that concept is “radical optimism.” This “radical optimism” is something we discovered while dancing with William Forsythe, who created a safe space to explore and discover. This safe place enabled me to develop artistic fluidity and to take risks while exploring an abstract Contemporary language.
Creative work, process and improvisation technologies taught me that innovation and creativity starts from within and the options are infinite. The process starts with an honest dialogue using a set of tools and imagination. It was a joy to share these tools with the MIP® artists last year and witness them discovering the power of their own artistic voices and expressing their uniqueness. I look forward to 2019 MIP® , and sharing new physical research elements that are integral for artists in our Contemporary Dance World.
WHAT MAKES MIP® UNIQUE?
MIP® offers an opportunity for an artist to expand their mind, skills, increase perspectives, and develop the sensitivity to transform themselves as artists and human beings. It encourages risk-taking in a safe space to deepen the understanding of their unique voice.
WHAT IS NEXT?
MIP® will continue offering classes founded in process and improvisational technologies including Gaga, Forsythe Technologies, Floorwork, Immersive Dance Theater, Physical Dance Theatre. Additionally, we will touch upon dance and technology including; dance photography and video invention. A MIP® artist will leave with skills and a level of innovation that will prepare them to be on the pulse of global connectivity.
We look forward to MIP® 2019 and providing a safe space for aspiring artists to expand into limitless possibilities.
